I  know  some  of  you  aren't  old  enough  to  drive  yet,  but  when  you  do  become  eligible,  please  don't  EVER  get  behind  the  wheel  if  you  have  had  even  one  drink.  I  beg  of  you  all,  do  not  drink  and  drive.  If  you  are  going  to  have  a  few  drinks  with  dinner,  or  going  out  with  some  friends  to  a  party  or  a  bar,  take  a  cab/bus,  call  a  friend  for  a  ride,  or  designate  a  driver.  It's  not  worth  it  for  you  to  ruin  your  own  life  and  potentially  somebody  elses.

Last  night  at  about  5am  in  north  Atlanta,  my  brother  was  coming  home  from  a  night  out.  He  had  felt  tired  around  midnight  and  so  decided  to  crash  there  at  his  friend's  place.  He  awoke  around  5am  and  decided  to  get  home.  He  had  not  been  drinking  (or  if  he  had,  it  was  well  earlier  in  the  night)  as  the  .00  he  would  later  blow  on  the  breathalyzer  would  prove.  On  a  road  headed  back  to  his  place  in  midtown,  he  started  driving  his  2003  Subaru  Impreza  WRX  uphill  on  the  road  and  saw  a  car  coming  directly  at  him  as  he  reached  the  crest  of  the  hill.  The  car  was  completely  in  his  lane  which  he  couldn't  tell  until  it  was  too  late  due  to  the  hill.  In  an  act  of  desperation  to  avoid  the  head-on  collision  at  40mph,  he  jerked  the  wheel  to  the  right  and  was  clipped  along  the  left  side  of  his  car.  His  car  veered  off  the  road,  hit  the  curb  and  immediately  afterwards  a  fire  hydrant,  flipped  over  on  its  roof,  spun  sideways  and  came  to  rest  hard  on  the  driver's  side  door  against  a  utility  pole.  He  has  pretty  bad  injuries  to  his  neck,  back,  as  well  as  airbag  burn  on  his  face  and  his  wrist  may  be  broken.  Fire  fighters  were  called  to  the  scene  to  get  him  out  since  his  legs  were  caught  between  the  two  seats  and  the  center  console.  He  WAS  wearing  his  seat  belt.  The  driver  of  the  other  car,  an  Audi  A6,  was  given  a  sobriety  test  by  the  police  on  the  scene  and  egregiously  failed.  She  was  placed  under  arrest  while  my  brother  was  checked  out  by  the  paramedics  on  scene.  Right  now  my  brother  is  hospitalized  and  other  than  that  I  have  no  idea  how  he  is  and  it  is  the  most  difficult  thing  I've  ever  had  to  deal  with.

In  any  event,  I  am  very  thankful  that  he  is  indeed  still  alive  and  did  not  sustain  any  non-repairable  injuries  (according  to  my  mother  who  flew  down  there  this  morning)  since  the  car's  roof  held  up  and  did  not  crush  him.  On  the  other  hand,  I  hate  that  it  has  to  take  something  like  this  to  happen  before  it  really  puts  into  perspective  the  dangers  of  drinking  and  driving.  I  would  rather  pay  $10  for  a  cab  than  have  my  life  or  worse  yet,  someone  else's  life  be  taken.  Please  don't  drink  and  drive,  and  do  your  best  to  discourage  others  from  participating  in  this  disgusting  behavior.

Im  really  sorry  to  hear  that  jill,  but  im  glad  he  is  alive.  Drunk  drivers  are  a  scary  thing  to  see.  I'm  gald  you  posted  this  message  here  because  its  hard  to  tell  people  you  care  about  not  to  do  it  because  you  dont  want  to  be  a  bother.  Hopefully  this  will  help  everyone  here  remember  the  pain  something  like  this  can  cause  your  family  and  the  other  persons  family.

Your  brother  has  my  best  wishes  to  make  a  speedy  recovery.  Hes  luckey  to  have  a  sister  who  cares  for  him  like  you  do.

I  am  glad  to  know  everything  is  going  to  be  fine.  Another  word  of  advice  I  would  like  to  note  would  be  that  if  you  ever  do  drink  at  a  party  or  your  friends  house,  always  make  sure  the  place  has  somewhere  you  can  sleep  for  the  night  if  you  know  no  one  else  will  be  able  to  take  you  home,  which  is  very  usual  since  anyone  there  is  most  likely  drinking  as  well.
