Ahh came probably too late to give you tips.

Before I got screwed over, I was actually putting tons of research into computer hardware to build a new rig for myself for BF3. I'm writing this up for you of my own opinion for your PC trouble SOLELY based for gaming needs.

The quick answer to your question (i7 yes or no) is actually no.

If you looks into any benchmarks whether it is from Tom's Hardware or Guuru3d or any other site you will see it makes NO sense to get an i7 for gaming. It only makes sense for video editing (render times) where the i7s hyperthreading and 2mb of extra cache makes a difference. The primary thing that limits your gaming performance is your GPU.

To give you a perspective I bought my computer years ago with a 2.13 ghz dual core (E6400 I think?) and the nVidia 7900GS GPU. Eventually my rig became really outdated and I couldn't even remotely think about playing games like Crysis 2. All I did was upgrade from 2gb to 4gb of ram and got myself an ATI 4870 card. Went from a PC that is unable to play Crysis 2 to a PC that played it decently on high settings. Same case with your rig. If you play BF3 now, you will play low-medium settings with the 4870. Upgrade to ATi 6970 or GTX 570 and you will play at high-max settings as long as the GPU isn't bottlenecked.

I'd either stick with your current CPU or get the i5 2500k and save yourself $100. I would do some research and just see if your CPU doesn't bottleneck a card (most likely doesn't).

I actually had this talk with Mega before and although his opinion is to pick i7 to "futureproof" yourself, I personally think by the time games will actually take advantage of the current i7 quirks, the next 2 generations of processors will be out and the mid ranges i5 will blow the current i7 out of the water anyway.

Quick recap

"So, there are 2 generations of i7, right ?
- Which one to go for ? If I choose the 1st generation, how are the processors called ? Intel i7 920 ?
- And what about the 2nd generation ? How are these processors called ? I've seen one for 999.99$, whcih was called 990x or something...I've got money for that, but my question is - is it worth it, and is all that computing power needed ? Very Happy
- Does the motherboard play a distinct role ?
- And what is the minimum ammount of ram for such rig ? 6gb ? "

1. Yes, see Mega's post for more details on the chipset. I personally recommend Sandy Bridge chipsets which is processors like the i5 2500k and i7 2600k.

2. See Mega's post again, it is like the 920s. Definitely better go with the Sandy Bridge option for efficiency and just best bang for the buck though. Please don't spend a grand on a processor or even more than $300 because you will literally see little to no difference in gaming or normal computer use.

3. MB plays a very distinctive role. Check the model you have and see if it is compatible with the Sandy Bridge chipset. As for right Mobo for the GPU, I don't think the PCI slots changed recently so it doesn't matter? I could be wrong.

4. Ram is CHEAP! Get G.Skill Ripjaw 2x4GB 1600mhz ram and you're set! If you're getting 6, get 2x3GB (not 3x2GB) and you'll be fine as well. Getting more than 8GB actually shows VERY SLIGHT performance decrease in gaming.

Conclusion? Think GPU NOT CPU if you're looking for gaming. Say you keep your specs constant and only upgrade your CPU (to an i7), I don't expect more than a 10-15 frames per second increase (at best) while the GPU will let you play at much higher settings AND higher frames per second.

Woah, that was most informotivating, N!ke Very Happy

It's really hard to make a solid decision, when you've got the funds to get almost any CPU or GPU out there, and it's really hard to take the i5 instead of i7, since it's probably my last PC for gaming-and-all-round, ever. Wanna make it last as long as I can.

And I'm really thinking of putting in some sort of beast GPU in it.
*Insert-a-suggestion-of-the-most-powerful-dual-GPU-cards-here*, would those be Geforce GTX 590 ?

My problem with myself is that I want to run BF3 on max, and I've heard that people struggled a little with the single GTX 590 on ultra @ BF3 beta, and the developers commented, that Beta's ultra is the full game's medium.

So I guess this boils down to this:

- 0. I get the cheapest deal possible - AMD cpu that is adequate to i5 2500k, and HD 6950 with 6 gb of RAM ( and then go wondering, will BF3 run good on it, and will I be able to upgrade it in the future )
- 1. I get the i5 2500k + single GTX590 (or ATI adequate)
- 2. I get the i5 2500k + double GTX590 (any bottleneck there ? powerconsumption :O ?)
- 3. I get the i7 2600k + single GTX590 (and hope to get a good card after half of the year or even later)
- 4. I get the i7 2600k + double GTX590 ( i go bankrupt on the electricity bill, but FML Very Happy

)

Any better suggestions ?
Im currently waiting on my guy to answer my e-mail, cant catch him anywhere. Dont even know the current situation in the warehouse.

And thanks a great bunch guys, wouldnt know what to do without these magic tips !

you don't need dual gpu's unless your on a 30" 2560 x 1600 monitor. most are ~1080p and a single 590 should spank that pretty good. As for the cpu between me and N!ke we have pretty much detailed everything you need to know to make a decent judgment on it based on your needs. =)

And I'm thinking of running it on 1920x1080, default resolution for my monitor.

I wonder if my guy even has anything as SLI cards. To buy such a beast - that is no problem to me, but what scares me is the power consumption, because I work quite a lot with Photoshop/InDesign and other Adobe products, which is same as PC idle time.

Anyone to dare and compare power consumption for this beast to e8400 dual core + HD4870 ? 2 times more ? 3 ?

If you have a higher budget to play with, more power to you. Definitely go for the i7 2600k. Powerful, efficient, runs cool, and its ezcake to overclock. I would get it too simply for bragging rights if I had the money. However, don't skimp out on a mobo or a powersupply just because you wanted a better CPU.

I also almost shat myself when I see that you have SLI GTX 590 as an option. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that card is already a dual GPU so TECHNICALLY that's like putting four cards in SLI. If you're playing BF3 on 3 50inch TVs, then a SLI 590 setup will be necessary haha. To give you a perspective, Skap was able to play the game on max with his ATI 5970 and when he changed his setting from ultra to high he kept 100+ frames per second. I think this might help you out a lot.

As you can see, max is multiscreen and 3d monitors. A GTX 570 and a ATI 6970 can run this game on ultra (highest possible settings without getting into 3d or multiscreens). Again, if you have a higher budget then you can go for the GTX 580 which is an insane card. 590 GTX is just too much in my eyes whether it is cost or performance, and I believe it costs like $800. Completely overkill.

Seeing that you have a decent budget this is what I would go with

i7 2600k
GTX 570 (or GTX 580 but that's $500)
8GB 1600mhz ram (I recommend G.SKill Ripjaw, newegg has AWESOME reviews for them)
Asus P67 or Z68 mobo
750 powersupply

This set up would play BF3 maxed out....

I'll add more later but laptop battery dying....

I've phoned the guy at the warehouse, and he's busy, can't be of help right now. But what he said he'd do, is give me a log-in into their system, so I can see everything that is available. Currently waiting on an email.

If it's not too much, then when I have the access to those database numbers, I'll post here the choices I have.

I'm glad I can help. I literally spent hours doing research because I was planning to build a rig for myself for BF3 but I got a budget cut. Figure I put some use of doing all that research into helping someone out if I can't take advantage of it myself. I do have a grand to play with which can easily get me ultra settings on BF3 (same spec I mentioned above to you but CPU i5 2500k and GPU is GTX 570) but I am still waiting for final release of the game and play with it at my friend's house to decide for sure. It's hard to justify spending $1k on a single game so it must truly amaze me (as well as others because playing BF games by yourself is totally lame).

Another tip I can give you is once you have the list of all the parts from the warehouse, compare them not only to the prices of newegg, but look at newegg reviews to make sure you don't get some garbage item.

As for the power consumption, are you asking what rating power supply you should get or just worried about your electric bill? I don't have a huge knowledge in this but from what I heard the i7 is pretty efficient but it's the high end GPU that need lots of power, especially under strain that BF3 will put them through. I'd guess a good 650W supply would do for the spec I mentioned above but I'm always skeptical so I go 100W more then I think I'd need. I'm gonna let Mega or someone else give you tips on that though, I'm not too good with PSUs.

Where did you hear that? I have a difficult time believing that but if you found this from a reputable source than everything I told you could be entirely false haha

I've checked out what the warehouse has. Prices are reasonable, though...The problem is choice. Which is very limited.

Newegg wont work for me probably. I'd die waiting for shipment, that's one thing, the other is shipping price (newegg is USA ? so they'd have to ship stuff to Europe, and oh my god if something was wrong with the product itself or w/e...shipping back etc. sounds like a no no).
Also, from what I've seen so far, I'm almost happy.

I'll try cracking down that semi-huge list to more compact one, and I'll post it here. Most stuff I've figured out from what Mega and you guys gave me to think about, the problem for me, as usual, is MOBO's and RAM's, because I've had trouble with those before.

The bill is the thing that scares me. I dont really game that much, but PC is mostly on through evenings, music+studies etc. I think I'll just have to manage somehow.

I've read several dozen of posts on different internet sources about DICE themselves tweeting about this. Later on it seems that they changed their minds, and noted, that the -medium- should actually be -high-, and then again, someone denied it on their twitter.

Currently I'm thinking about i7 2600k + GTX 590

And that is basicly it. There's a ton of GTX 580s in the list, but I've highlighted my choices in white, if it's possible to get those kind of components working together.

I also have 1 more additional question ;D :
- is it worth buying an SSD type of hard drive, instead of the HDD's we're used to ? Low ammount of space is no problem to me, I have 1 TB external + more storage space available. The question is - is the speed increase that significant ? Or would this be unnecessary waste of money ?

SSD are a complete waste of money. I have one and I kinda wish I didn't. They have high fail rates, do not help performance on games, and load times within games are never helped since games rely on RAM and VRAM not write speed to load things like levels and textures. This is very apparent in multiplayer games where the level won't start until everyone loads in anyway.

All SSDs help with are boot speeds and even then it's not worth the money. They'll help load a game from windows to splash screens maybe by like 3 or 4 seconds at most.

DO NOT BUY INTO THE HYPE!!!
