Hello,

I've talked to Mega about this, but I'm not sure, really. I was thinkin of going to gotfrag.com hardware forums, but they seem to be dead +and+ deleted ? What a place that was...you ask, they pour you in with a glass of wisdom.

So here is the thing - I'm expecting my "gaming" to end for real, in about 1-2 years, as big things are to come, i fear (lmao Very Happy

). So I'm thinkin of playing a bit of Battlefield BC2 and perhaps, some BF3 with a few old farts here in the neighbourhood, but my rig is not exactly THAT ONE, which could deliver fun.

Currently I've got

e8400 OC'ed at 3.6 ghz
ATi HD4870 xfx
and 4 gigs of ram

What I'm thinking about, is getting an i7 processor (of course, motherboard has to follow with that), and I really dont know anything about them. I'm going to keep my old graphics card and mostly everything else (although, I'll be needing a new case, right ?).

Tried reading some reviews, and they only baffled me further, lol.

So, there are 2 generations of i7, right ?
- Which one to go for ? If I choose the 1st generation, how are the processors called ? Intel i7 920 ?
- And what about the 2nd generation ? How are these processors called ? I've seen one for 999.99$, whcih was called 990x or something...I've got money for that, but my question is - is it worth it, and is all that computing power needed ? Very Happy

- Does the motherboard play a distinct role ?
- And what is the minimum ammount of ram for such rig ? 6gb ?

I haven't really paid much attention to the new generation of Intel processors since I built my PC last summer but from what I remember...the i7-2600K is a good mid range performance chip. The 990X and 980X are hexacore processors while the 2600K and other Sandybridge ones are quad core. So, it depends what you want.

The 990X is Nehalem based, the same as the i7 920 I have...so it's a couple generations older architecture. Despite that, it's blazing fast for programs that'll take advantage of the full cores of the CPU. So, if you've got the money for the 990x... I wouldn't go less than 6GB of RAM but you can get 12 for 200 bucks now lol.

Anyway, what did Mega say? If you've talked to Mega about it I really don't see much need in asking around too much.

PS: Sandybridge is a lot more power efficient.

Btw Riddick, where does Sandybridge appear ? i7 920, or do I have to get 990x ? First time I hear of it lol.

With Mega....It was minitalk what we've talked about.. that's why I'm waiting on his take ;D

And yeah, killa, I know it would be enough...But right now I've got the money, and if I wait long enough, something will come around to melt it, and it's bye bye PC.

Currently Im still studyin, and Im not quite sure yet what programs I'll be using in the future. There is a great possibility for all kinds of multi-taks-needy-ones, for takin care of the business of press and advertising.

No idea, all I know I want to run BC2 and few other games while I still want and can.

The newer sandybridge 2600 line is faster, more energy efficient and a easy overclock to 4ghz. The best one of the lineup is the 2600k which is the unlocked multiplier version of the chip. Since you don't have 1366 chip already it is a great option as an upgrade to your dual core.

If you had a i7 already sandybridge isn't really a reason to jump ship. Yes its faster and cooler but really the 9xx line is still such an amazing performer that I would still recommend it (especially the 970 gulftown if you had the money sleepy3

)

Sandybridge is on a newer socket that was to replace the 1156 8xx series i7 cpu's. Basicly intels whole i7 line is fragmented to hell with socket selection. I think its bullshit personally but nobody seems to complain about that besides me. There are also quite a few chipsets for the sandybridge line each with pros and cons you are going to have to look into if you go that route. Chances are that your going to get a P67 or Z68 chipset though. Here is a nice chart for you on features: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_1155

one note I'll throw out there is I think the 1366 socket is at the lifes end with the LGA2011 socket coming up to replace it and the 1155 socket is still new but looking at the lifespan of the 1156 its not looking good.

I would recommend 6GB of ram minimum for any 1366 based i7 (due to the tri-channel configuration) and 4-8GB for a 1155 based i7. This is all DDR3 btw, your dual core's DDR2 is sadly no longer compatible with newer systems.

So many variables to consider but really either choice you make an i7 is a beastly machine that you will be happy to own. I'm considering replacing my 920 with the 970 just because I seem to always find ways to max out my system. What it all comes down to is finding a price and building a system around that chunk of money. Both i7 lines are great performers that can bust through any game/app out there, it all depends on your choice of price/heat/upgrade path.

TLDR; Intel's 2600k i7 is fast/easy OC/newhotness/meh chipset
Intels 9xx i7 is still speed king/more upgrade options/possible EOL socket

edit//killa-poo is right about the videocard upgrade, you might want to do that one first. That dual core is still relevant at that clock.

Ima write an email to my guy, he's workin at the main warehouse in our country, to which all these hardware goodies get shipped to in the first place, and then companies buy from him. At least that's what he had to say, when I asked him about it. I'm sayin this because - they sometimes happen to have the best stuff available, and they sometimes happen to be starving of the most simple things.

If you don't mind, I'll post a few possible variants here, refering to your post, Mega. I'm really not that savvy with all this technical stuff, and so far I'm really happy to see that yer all literate D: What would I doooo :D

By the way, killapoo...I've heard about people testing/buying new riggs to play Bad Company 2, and their conclusions were that the only thing that improved their FPS, was raw CPU power, and a change of GPU did barely +5 FPS (at least that's what several guys have said).
Basicly, this is what motivated me to this move - otherwise I would've waited till autumn, to buy a new PC. My plan is - buy a good processor, some RAMs for performance, and leave my ATi HD4870 to do it's job till autumn. If it's not enough, I'll get a new card then. Who knows, it may perform well in BC2, and that's all I need at the moment.

P.S.: I forgets to mention - got myself an ACER GD245hq monitor a few months ago. Never payed attention to monitors, always played on some Tetris sized stuff @ 60 hz lmao. I gotta say guys - this thing, this 120 hz beast @ 1920x1080...Even if the game runs at unstable 60 fps, it's so much more rewarding to your eyes and overall experience. You wouldnt believe how smove it is, the first day I bought it I was JesusChristMotnerOfGoding everywhere. If you don't have it - THINK ABOUT IT ! D:

Those seem to be the right numbers on price, although, I'm not sure.
Why is the #5 so pricy ?   Is it worth it ?

Should I go for sandybridge 2600K or ... ?
I'm a bit baffled, because this variety is a variety, but a bit sh*ty to me, at first glance.

And the worst thing here is that the guy went on holiday, and will be back only on 24th. Things may change in the warehouse, they may bring some stuff in, or sell...

So what do you think (Mega :D), not putting price into consideration, which one is the best choice (of these) ?
And what would you buy, if you weren't limited by the list ? Perhaps my guy can put through an order, and they'll send it over, not sure about that tho - but still would like to kno :D

I, myself, am not sure of anything. But if it so happened, that I got the one which saves power - I'd be very happy.

Mmmm.. After much speculation on that list, I would say your insight on possibly going for the sandybridge 2600k would probably be the best overall choice. People appear to be praising that cpu, especially for its nice OC capabilities (Also a lot of buys for it too). Also, the reason why the 965 processor is almost 1k in price is because it is an extreme edition cpu made from the purest of components with little impurities and is a much higher cut above the rest in response/performance. The 980x is actually also an extreme edition that would be about the same price if it happened to be on that list.

Hey sorry for the delay in response, been a crazy weekend. The 2600k is your best bet since clock for clock its more efficient then the older architectures.

looking at your list its best if you can get #10 or #11. The difference between them is the non k has its multiplier locked which could slightly reduce your over clocking potential.

Looks like you have a good source of parts there at a good price too Wink

Thanks guys, I think that this is going to be my (final) choice.

Not sure tho...when my guy comes back, I'll check on the warehouse's offerings again, I'll come back to you with a build he's offering, and perhaps you can give me a tip on RAMs and power supply. Because my guy is one of those "from the older generation", and he sometimes struggles with new stuff. And investing this kind of money into a PC - you want to make the best choice.

I've read your previous post, Mega, so now I also think 2600k is probably the best choice. So thanks for that.

And yeah, K!kyo, 1k added price just for quality...Hmm, probably not gonna OC beyond anything standard fan allows, so there's my choice.

I just keep wondering what is next in line for PCs ? Bio-engineering ?

5ghz on air is insane. too bad they don't mention the cooler they used. My guess is they stuck a giant copper block and an industrial fan blowing on it xD
