First  of  all  let  me  point  out  some  obvious  facts  I  hope  you  guys  won't  try  and  bitch  me  out  on.

    1)  This  is  a  mass  post,  I  will  /  have  posted  this  on  UE,  o2o,  dT,  eRa,  and  #1  just  to  see  what  everyone's  thoughts  and  opinions  are.
     2)  I'm  not  looking  for  a  flame  war
     3)  I'm  dead  serious  and  in  no  way  looking  for  enemies.
     4)  I'm  sorry  if  it  offends  you.
     5)  Please,  please,  PLEASE  read  all  of  what  I  wrote  on  my  views  if  you  are  going  to  comment  with  sincerity  and  seriosity(you  don't  have  to  read  all  of  it  necessarily,  but  I  think  it  would  eliminate  confusion  /  skipping  over  details).
     6)  If  this  post  is  deemed  innapropriate  for  any  reason  notify  me  personally  and  I  will  delete  this  post  immediately,  please  do  not  reprimand  me  for  a  harmlessly  intended  action.

Setting:  I  was  at  my  girlfriend's  house  earlier,  watching  The  Last  Samurai  /  Spiderman  2  on  the  tube  when  somehow  my  girlfriend  brought  up  the  fact  that  on  my  myspace  page  I  had  listed  my  religious  view  as  "Athiest".

Background  Information:  I  do  not  think  that  I  believe  in  a  higher  power.   I  think  sometimes  I  use  the  comforting  idea  that  something  out  there  controls  my  fate,  and  that  He  or  She  or  It  may  possess  the  ability  to  make  things  better  for  me,  and  may  help  me  when  I  am  down.   This  is  not  a  true  belief  in  a  God  or  higher  being  to  me  though...  the  way  I  view  it  is  just  as  a  scapegoat  for  what  I  would  rather  not  own  up  to  /  path  of  weakness.  This  is  all  for  me  personally,  I  am  NOT  generalizing.  Therefore,  I  do  not  think  that  I  believe  in  any  God  whatsoever.

The  Meat:  My  girlfriend  asked  me  if  I  could  remove  my  claim  of  Atheism  from  my  myspace  page.  Me  being  a  curious  person  and  like  to  know  the  reasons  behind  people's  actions,  I  asked  why.   She  couldn't  quite  give  me  a  good  reason,  as  she  gets  a  bit  nervous  /  shy  about  certain  things.   Overall,  I  think  it  was:

    1)  She  doesn't  like  the  idea  of  me  not  having  a  faith  in  something
     2)  Her  family  probably  feels  the  same  way

My  initial  reaction  was  that  I  would  be  angry  at  anyone  for  taking  a  disliking  to  someone  else  in  any  way  because  of  their  spiritual  concentration  or  lack  thereof.   To  me  it  seems  unreasonable  to  dislike  someone  as  a  person  because  of  their  religious  views.   To  understand  what  I'm  thinking,  picture  your  grandmother.   If  she  was  Catholic,  and  you  were  Catholic  as  well,  what  if  upon  hearing  that  your  girlfriend  was  not  Catholic  she  would  immediately  think  worse  of  her?   Assuming  of  course  that  she  liked  your  girlfriend  perfectly  fine  prior  to  this  knowledge.   Wouldn't  that  bother  you  just  a  little  bit?

Can't  think  of  a  title:  One  thing  that  came  out  of  my  girlfriend's  mouth  at  the  end  of  the  night  is  that  she  would  want  the  entire  family  to  go  to  church  and  participate--she  would  not  want  to  be  the  only  one  going  to  church,  or  half  the  family  going,  etc.   That  to  me  does  not  involve  believing  in  the  religious  view,  so  much  as  physical  support.   In  that  instance,  does  the  belief  itself  really  matter  or  the  intent?   I'm  not  about  to  break  up  with  her  over  this,  I  think  it's  too  foolish  and  not  serious  enough  an  issue  at  this  point  in  life  to  deal  with.   And  she  is  quite  possibly  the  best  thing  to  ever  happen  to  me  in  my  entire  life,  no  joke,  so  I'm  not  open  to  any  ideas  of  separation.   She  is  a  good  person  and  open  to  anything  I  have  to  say.

That  being  said,  I  guess  I  just  want  some  main  things  from  you,  if  I  may:

    1)  Is  religion  that  big  of  a  deal  that  you  can't  spend  your  life  with  someone  that  does  not  share  your  religious  views?

I  think  that's  all  I  can  put  to  words  at  the  moment.  If  I  think  of  anything  else  I'll  post  it  later.  Thanks  for  your  time,  I  just  want  to  see  what  others  think.

Dime,  unfortunately  sometimes  what  people  believe  is  what  the  believe.  If  for  her  to  be  happy  requires  someone  who  shares  her  faith  then  maybe  thats  what  she  should  be  looking  for.  For  me  personally,  I  am  pretty  open  minded  therefore  it  wouldn't  really  bother  me  if  my  husband  is  not  the  same  religion  as  me.  But  for  some  people,  that  may  be  very  important.  Perhaps  you  should  ask  her  if  it  is  really  is  important  to  her,  and  find  out  if  there  is  a  future  with  someone  who  does  not  share  the  same  views  as  her.  If  she  cannot  deal  with  that,  then  IMO,  she  is  not  worth  your  time.

In  my  opinion  having  a  belief  in  an  upper  being  is  very  foolish,  because  for  one  no  one  has  ANY  proof  that  they  existed.  Until  we  build  a  time  machine  to  go  back  to  see  if  any  of  this  stuff  was  true  then  no  one  can  really  say  anything  about  it.  I  am  Atheist  just  like  you  because  there  is  no  proof  of  any  upper  being  existence.  It's  also  very  foolish  of  your  girl  friend  (no  offense)  to  believe  in  an  upper  being,  and  also  very  foolish  of  her  to  think  that  you  HAVE  to  believe  in  something.  We  chose  to  be  Atheist  and  therefore  we  should  not  be  punished  for  what  we  think  is  right.  I  mean  i  could  go  to  church  and  all  that  junk  but  it  would  have  no  effect  on  me  or  my  life.  It's  not  like  going  to  church,  praying,  etc..  has  any  affect  on  your  life.  I  know  multiple  people  that  are  Christian  and  have  horrible  lives  but  they  still  pray  and  go  to  church  and  do  all  that  jibber  jabber.  But  if  you  girl  friend  thinks  that  you  HAVE  to  believe  in  something  then  that  is  just  silly  of  her.  You  have  chosen  to  be  Atheist  and  just  because  she  wants  you  to  think  that  your  relationship  is  in  jeopardy  because  of  something  as  stupid  as  believing  in  a  god.  The  only  thing  that  you  should  believe  in  is  yourself  and  the  people  around  you  because  they  should  have  faith  in  you.

I  agree  with  TRQ  completely.   To  some  people,  religion  is  very  important  and  can't  go  on  in  life  without  being  in  a  relationship  with  someone  of  a  different  belief.   However,  if  she  wasn't  that  outspoken  about  it,  I  doubt  she's  this  type  of  person.   I  think  she's  probably  mixed  up  thinking,  "you  know,  i  want  someone  that  would  be  of  the  same  faith,  but  I  really  like  dime."   It's  smart  of  you  not  to  start  any  quarrels  over  it  and  just  be  yourself.

 As  for  Senator....
I  think  you're  being  very  foolish  by  calling  people  who  don't  believe  in  the  same  thing  as  you  (atheism)  foolish.   There  is  a  reason  why  it's  called  "FAITH"  and  "SPIRITUALITY".   Nothing  has  to  be  proven  to  BELIEVE  in  something.   And  you  say  you  know  many  christians  who  go  on  praying  when  their  lives  are  shit.   You  think  these  people  who  pray  only  pray  because  they  want  a  better  life?   And  since  they  dont  get  it,  they're  foolish?   That  is  incredibly  foolish  to  even  think  that  way.   My  health  is  shit.   No  doubt  I  turned  my  back  on  God,  but  came  back  because  I  realized  that  God  has  no  control  over  out  mortal  bodies.   He  has  no  control  over  our  lives.   Hell,  why  didn't  he  stop  Adam  and  Eve  from  eating  the  apple?   Why  didn't  he  prevent  9/11  from  happening?   Try  to  be  objective  and  considerate  of  others  before  judging.

Well  to  me  saying  that  you  believe  in  an  upper  being  is  like  me  saying  I  believe  in  unicorns,  leprechauns,  ogres,  and  all  that  fairy  tale  stuff,  it's  just  bs.  As  for  Adam  and  Eve,  once  again  I  go  back  to  the  believability  of  it,  only  those  who  have  read  the  Bible  or  have  been  told  about  the  bible  know  about  Adam  and  Eve,  and  what  they  did.  Seeing  how  they  were  the  first  human  beings  on  earth,  you  think  that  they  would  be  able  to  learn  english  as  soon  as  they're  made?  Hell  no.  Religion  is  just  a  scam  made  up  for  money  and  to  fool  people  to  think  that  they  will  be  able  to  pray  to  the  god  of  their  choice  and  get  that  something  or  something  along  the  lines  of  what  they  prayed  for.  Like  you  don't  see  everyone  in  the  world  with  nice  cars,  nice  houses,  good  health,  etc..  but  they  don't.  I  mean  if  gods  were  real  then  the  world  would  a  perfect  place  and  everyone  would  be  perfect.  Yea  with  "Faith",  I  could  say  I  have  faith  in  this  and  that  and  in  this  person  but  that  doesn't  mean  that  they'd  do  what  I  want  them  to  do.  Like  I  have  faith  in  my  soccer  team,  but  we  don't  win  every  game  nor  do  we  win  every  tournament,  or  i  have  faith  in  my  friends  but  they  still  talk  behind  my  back  and  do  stuff  that  isn't  really  faithful.  I  am  not  trying  to  say  that  people  who  aren't  Atheist  are  foolish,  all  I  am  trying  to  say  is  that  his  girl  friend  is  foolish  for  thinking  that  her  boy  friend  HAS  to  believe  in  a  god  in  order  to  be  with  her.  Choosing  your  religion  is  up  to  the  person,  I  just  think  that  believing  in  upper  being  is  non-sense  and  a  waste  of  time,  because  how  do  you  know  they  exist?  You  don't  know,  no  body  does.  Until  I  actually  see  a  god  for  myself  then  I  will  start  to  believe  but  then  otherwise  I'm  sticking  with  Atheism.  And  Josie  I  know  of  the  ramification's  that  will  come  from  this  and  I'm  willing  to  defend  myself  to  anyone  who  thinks  I'm  not  right.

Not  exactly.   Unicorns,  leprechauns,  ogre,  and  fairy  tale  stuff  doesn't  give  you  comfort  or  give  you  a  map  for  life.

well,  it's  actually  the  exact  opposite.   if  everything  and  everyone  were  perfect,  we  would  be  god  and  there  would  be  no  need  for  a  higher  source  or  "ultimate  god".   to  every  positive  there  is  a  negative  for  an  equal  balance.

that  was  kind  of  my  point  though.   What  we  believe  becomes  truth  to  ourselves.  There  is  no  definitive  answer  to  the  existance  of  a  higher  being,  but  those  of  religion  believe  there  is.

You  just  contradicted  yourself  by  saying  "I'm  not  trying  to  say  that  people  who  aren't  atheist  are  foolish...  but  I  think  that  believing  in  an  upper  being  is  nonsense  and  a  waste  of  time".

I'm  not  gonna  keep  on  this  argument  because  your  argument  about  this  girl  is  like  democrat  vs  republican.   yous  are  both  the  same  essentially.
